With QB Matt Schaub going on IR, the Houston Texans signed former Jets draft bust Kellen Clemens to a contract. It hasn't been indicated whether he will start or become a backup to Leinart.
I like this move a lot. I have always felt that Kellen Clemens could be one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league, but not a starter.
Clemens was drafted in 2006 by the Jets and spent his first season as a backup to Chad Pennington. When Pennington was struggling in 2007, he took over as starter for the next few games. He never did become the starter that the Jets hoped he would be, and was demoted to backup, behind Brett Favre in 2008 and Mark Sanchez in 2009.
Clemens with the Jets
His fate seemed sealed when the Jets signed the (nearly) 40-year-old Mark Brunell in the 2010 offseason, yet somehow he signed a one-year deal and relieved Brunell in the week 17 matchup against the Bills.
He signed a one-year deal with the Redskins this past offseason, but was cut before the season started.
I really hope that he can play well enough to earn a contract with some team next year and beyond.
